Fun-Filled Day in College Station

Donna Marie planned an amazing field trip to the A&M Teaching Gardens, Benz School of Floral Design, Presidential Library, Aggie creamery, and Martha’s Bloomers.

Our first stop was Martha’s Bloomers for plant shopping and an early luncheon. The garden center has a great selection and the gift shop is filled with unique items and gourmet products. We sampled their famous Savory Saltines, a recipe created by the employees. Located on Hwy 6 in Navasota and 15 minutes south of Bryan-College Station, look for the giant teapot right before the entrance.

The Gardens at Texas A&M are turning five. The entire project encompasses approximately 27 acres and Phase I, the Leach Teaching Gardens, which opened in June 2018 features 21 themed gardens, an outdoor classroom, event lawn, demonstration area, and pavilion.

Our next stop was the Benz Gallery of Floral Art located in the atrium of the Horticulture/Forest Sciences Building, and the Benz School of Floral Design, of particular interest to the members of The Woodlands Garden Club Floral Group. We enjoyed the special exhibit “Single Serving Art” and peeked in the floral design class rooms.

At George H.W. Bush Library & Museum we visited the Barbara Bush Rose Garden and the Bush Family Gravesite.

A great way to end the day was a visit to the new Creamery at Aggie Park, serving Blue Bell Ice Cream and baked goods. The very popular original location closed in 1995.

We are looking for a new “Chairman of Fun” aka Chair of the Field Trip Committee! Please email thewoodlandsgardenclub@gmail.com if you are interested in this exciting position, or would like to join the committee. From incoming President Sally Centrich: “A big thank you to Donna for orchestrating so many great events over the years!”
