Celebrating National Garden Week With A Montage Of The 2023-24 Plant Studies

National Garden Week is about bringing awareness to the importance of gardening, and preserving gardening traditions and practices by passing on knowledge to new gardeners. For The Woodlands Garden Club members it’s also about the love of gardening!

An important part of The Woodlands Garden Club monthly meetings is the “Plant Study” coordinated by the Horticulture Committee co-chairs Betty Lahiri and Viviane Tondeur, and presented by one of the members who usually donate the plant for the drawing. From houseplants to pollinators and vegetables, and rare and exotic species to wildflowers, we enjoyed learning about these plants:

September – Staghorn Fern – Betty Lahiri

Staghorn fern is a rare plant species that requires a good amount of care. The whimsical fronds resemble antlers, and Staghorn ferns can be mounted on boards, plaques, or even tree trunks.

October – Parijat Tree – Raksha Patel

Parijat Tree (Night-flowering Jasmine) is a very important symbol in the culture of India. The fragrant blooms open up at night and fall from the branches as soon as the sun rises.

November – Natives & Pollinators – Diane Wedgeworth

More than 20 varieties of milkweeds, wildflowers, ruellia, sages, and more!

January – Malabar Spinach – Kim Stautner

Malabar spinach (Basella family) is an attractive and edible vine. The green leaves resemble spinach and are similar in taste but provide even more nutritional benefits.

February – Silver Squill – Mauri Holguin

This popular bulb succulent makes an excellent houseplant with eye-catching lance-shaped leaves heavily mottled in silver and green.

March – Louisiana Green Eggplant – Kim Stautner

Louisiana Green Eggplant is a pale lime-green variety with tender skin and creamy-white flesh that is meaty and full-flavored.

April – Coralberry – Elaine Hogan

Coralberry is a Texas native versatile small shrub with small pinkish-yellow flowers in spring followed by showy clusters of scarlet berries in fall.

Thanks to all the presenters!
