TWGC Field Trip Bulbs Lunch & Learn

Donna Marie organized a wonderful field trip to The Brookwood Community Lunch & Learn series about bulbs for the Houston area presented by their Horticulture Manager Robert Grove. We learned which bulbs grow best here, when and how they should be planted for the best results, and care after flowering. Did you know tulips should be considered an “annual” bulb in our growing zone?

The program included a delicious luncheon, a salad with greens and ingredients from the Brookwood greenhouses, and each participant received a bag of bulbs, a hyacinth, and a choice of amaryllis or dahlia.

We shopped at the Gift Shop & Garden Center and our members left with car loads of plants and goodies. The Woodlands Garden Club is in its 21st year of supporting Brookwood in honor of a member’s son.

The Brookwood Community horticulture program grows more than 210,000 plants annually in 48 greenhouses. Each year Brookwood grows almost 50,000 poinsettia plants for sale and they operate a gift shop at Hughes Landing in The Woodlands during the holidays.

Insider tip: the most famous salad at The Brookwood Café is the Mesibov! Mixed Greens, Julienned Apples, Sugar Roasted Pecans, Bleu Cheese, Brookwood’s Mesibov Dressing (the secret ingredient!).
